as you were so enthusiatic about beneficio before and are back there now, i was there now too. Of course only in the internet.
First thing I read about Beneficio was an article in the press, which is mostly stating that spanish people are complaining about Bneficio and that is is quite dirty there.
Getting curoius I also watched other pages and a film on youtube about that Hippie-colony and to be honest: I don’t want to go there.
I also watched some films about the dragon festival, 2008 it must have been really cold there as all people are running round in warm clothes like Eskimos.
I was surprised that this festival is really small, there is more stuff happening in our fun fair/tivoli in Penzberg! So also I dont have to go there.
If you come to the internet again please let me hear some about whats happening in Beneficio

hello
i just want to give you a short impression about what I find so interesting in this place

What I find interesting about Beneficio is the vision and how people try to realize it practically
thats what you can learn a lot from

interesting is also that the experiences people make here are so very different from each other

the vision: a piece of land
1. that doesnt belong to anybody
2. where everyone can come and go as he/she wishes
3. where people live and love as an “extended family”
4. where people live together with nature and not against it

praxis…

1. land belongs to everybody - if someone wants to build a hut, he/se asks the neighbours, thats it.

2. everyone comes and goes as he/she wants to

3. family spirit… well, could be better…
it is more like an eco-village, with a lot of individual people and families - and some small-group-communities

some interesting traditions that show there is some kind of common sense are for example:
* living space is never empty (like in capitalist society), it is mormal that if somebody leaves his/her hut, someone else uses it in the meantime
* when you come to a circle where people are eating, normally you are offered some, no matter if you know them or not or speak their language
* most people are greeting each other, no matter if they know each other or not (”¡hola!”)
* …

problems for example:
* there is (physical) violence in this place like everywhere else
*there is a lot of people with psychological problems, drug addicts, etc - who would be even more outsider and fucked in “normal” society than here, but who also cant really get the support they¨d need here, as most people in general are too busy with their own survival
*the infrastructure is really bad, as so many people just come and go, a project that someone starts often is not finished, etc…

4. about nature:
nature is wonderful and very pure and clean compared to the rest of spain what I have seen so far
people here live much more in harmony with mama earth than in every “civilized” pueblo, they live a simple and creative live

many have their own small gardens, recycling is normal and not something that people say they aim for

“dirty” is - except the carpark maybe - the wrong word to describe it
there is cleaning days where all the people together collect all garbage from the valley
if you think in categories of “nature” there is no dirt there, more clean than the rest of spain I know
if you think in categories of “order”, well, yes, it is unordered, a bit uncivilized. nature is chaos, thats jut how it is!
and, yes, the people there are more dirty, but thats what happens when you dont have a shower but a waterfall and use ashes and eco-soap instead of shampoo

there is the problem of “stupid tourists” who dont use ecosoap and do a lots of other crappy bullshit, as they have nno idea about how to live in nature
but they definetely did not learn in beneficio that you can put washing powder in ariver, that is something they learned in the outside world where people flush their toilets with drinking water!
lots of people who come here deal with ecological topics for the first time in their life
so beneficio is also a big educational chance!

well, that spanish inhabitants complain, ¡ claro !

first; yes, lots of shit happens, people stealing in shops etc, as people want to survive
(I talked a little bit about this before, there is lots of people here in this place and this scene in general who just dont see any perspective in “outside world” for them - which is NOT the problem and especially not the fault of Beneficio but of all the society! these people end up here as they dont see another way for themselves!)

well, this happens in every city on this planet (and beneficio feels more like a city than a village with all this traffic there) and is not a question of “hippieness” but of poverty

another example of how many different people this place attracts is our own experience with a hungarian gipsy family, in whose house we almost ended up living - we talked to the neighbours, they said we could move in, we cleaned it, started to move in and the same day he came back
he was talking a lot with our hungarian tour-group-member Zsolt and they were quite happy that we had cleaned their house
and, no, they are not stealing gipsy-hippies, but seem to be a proper family with a surprisingly clean and happy baby

another reason why spanish people are sceptical: hippies just dont fit in the ideal of a media (TV)-made picture of a perfect human

the streets here are full of people with dreadlocks and hippieclothes, and old colourful cars
and you hear as much english as spanish

that is not only beneficios fault, but the whole area is just full of tourists, travellers, nomads and there is lots of other big alternative places, in direct surrounding “el moreon” and “cigarones” (big wagon places)

what these spanish people seem to forget is that those tourists bring lots of money to the region - what they are living of!
also the immigrants (mostly english people) build up an alternative (eco) economy, that attracts a lot of people with mones

this all is connected wit each other and cannot be seen separately
I think that (media)people who pass over here for a day cannot really understand all this and that short time
and also often dont try to see it in a really neutral way, compare values etc

my personal opinion is: the society here is not better, not worse than outside
it is mirroring the outside society, trying to improve things, often failing
also because it attracts so many people who were always taught that they are loosers…
it is definetely a very important place for experimenting with alternative and ecological forms of living and an interesting place for learning many things

about dragon festival: it is a free and dynamically selforganised festival and not at all comparable to this festival in penzberg
there is no organisation team and you cannot know what happens before it happens
there is no programm, nothing, just up to 20000 people and lots of own initiative, underground artists and interesting people

hallo du moechte dir das mal ein bisschen vermitteln, was ich hier so interessant finde:
was ich an beneficio interessant finde ist die vision und der versuch sie praktisch umzusetzen - daraus kann man sehr viel lernen
und interessant ist auch wie die erfahrungen der menschen dort teilweise meilenweit auseinandergehen

die vision: ein stueck land das
1. niemandem gehoert,
2. wo jeder kommen und gehen kann wie er mag,
3. wo leute als grosse familie (”extended family”) zusammen leben und lieben
4. und wo mit der natur im einklang gelebt wird

die praxis:

1. das land gehoert allen, man fragt den nachbarn ob es ok is ihm ne huette vor die nase zu bauen

2. jeder kommt und geht wie er mag

3. familienspirit: laesst zu wuenschen uebrig, es ist eher ein oeko-dorf mit vielen individuen, kleinfamilien und kleingruppen-”kommunen”

interessante praktiken sind aber zB
*dass wohnraeume NIE leer stehen gelassen werden - wenn jemand geht, nutzt ein anderer seine huette bis er wiederkommt, das ist selbstverstaendlich
* dass wenn man in einen kreis kommt wo leute essen, einem was angeboten wird, egal ob man die leute kennt oder deren sprache spricht
* dass sich alle gruessen auch wenn sie sich nicht kennen
* usw…

probleme zb
* sowas wie (koerperliche) gewalt gibt es auch hier,
* es gibt viele leute mit psychischen problemen, drogenabhaenigige, etc die in der normalen gesellschaft noch mehr aussenseiter waeren als hier aber denen auch hier nicht ausreichend hilfestellung geboten wird, weil die leute zu sehr mit ihrem eigenen (ueber)leben beschaeftigt sind
* schlechte infrastruktur, weil so viele leute kommen und gehen und angefangene projekte oft wieder liegengelassen werden

4. was die natur angeht: sie ist einfach wunderwunderschoen und vergleichsweise sehr unberuehert
die leute leben wesentlich mehr im einklang als in jedem “zivilisierten” dorf, sie leben schlicht, einfach - und kreativ

viele haben eigene kleine gaerten, recycling ist vollkommen normal und nicht etwas worueber man als etwas erstrebenswertes redet

“dreckig” ist es dort - ausser auf dem carpark - absolut nicht, es sei denn man bezeichnet erde als dreck, die gibt es dort, denn es ist natur
-
es gibt “clening days” wo aller muell gemeinsam aus dem valley geraeumt wird (so ne art ramadama)
wenn man in natuerlichen kategorien denkt mit abstand sauberer als der rest spanienes aussenherum den ich kenne
wenn man in kategorien von “ordnung” denkt, ist es vermutlich “unordentlich”, aber das iegt daran dass natur nunmal wuchert und nicht ordentlich ist
und, klar, die leute sind halt etwas dreckiger, was halt passiert wenn man keine badewanne hat und nur biologisch abbaubare seife verwendet

nun gut, es gibt einige “touristen” die keinen plan von oekologischem leben in der natur haben und die massig bloeden scheiss machen, wie zeugs, also zb waschmittel in den fluss kippen
sowas haben sie aber nicht in beneficio gelernt, im gegenteil: hier haben viele leute zum ersten mal die chance sich ueberhaupt mit soclehn themen zu beschaeftigen und zu lernen wie man mit der natur umgeheen sollte

dass spanische bewohner sich beklagen, auch klar:

erstens: ja, klar, es passiert viel scheiss es gibt einiges an leuten die in laeden klauen, etc, einfach weil sie ueberleben wollen (bin ja auch vorher schonmal drauf eingegenagen dass in dieser szene der anteil von leuten die in ner normalen gesellschaft einfach keinen fuss mehr fassen koennen sehr hoch ist - das ist aber der gesellschaft mindestens ebenso anzulasten wie den leuten selbst, diese leute landen in dieser szene weil sie keinen anderen ausweg sehen!!)

diese leute gibt es in jeder stadt (beneficio ist von der atmosphaere her mehr wie ne stadt als ein dorf, weil so viel wechsel da is und nich jeder jeden kennt) und das hat nich unbedingt was mit hippie oder nicht hippie zu tun sondern mit armut
-
ein weiteres beispiel dafuer dass der ort verschiedenste menschen anzieht ist zb dass wir fast ne weile im haus eines ungarischen zigeuners und seiner frau und kind gewohnt haetten, die sich hier niedergelassen haben sie waren nicht da, wir haben mit den nachbarn geredet, das haus geputzt und wollten gerade einziehen, da kamen sie wieder…

zweitens: die “hippies” passen nicht ins idealbild eines menschen, dass einem von fernsehen etc vermittelt wird

die strassen sind hier von bedreacklockten und hippiekleidung-tragenden menschen und bunten, alten autos dominiert, mehr als in jedem dorf spaniens dass ich je zuvor gesehn hab und man hoert genausoviel englisch wie spanisch
-
das kann man nicht beneficio allein ankreiden die komplette gegend ist voll mit touristen, reisenden, nomaden und es gibt massig andere alternativorte als beneficio, zB in direkter umgebung mindestens mal el moreon und cigarones (grosse wagenplaetze)

was die spanischen bewohner wohl gekonnt vergessen ist dass sie von den touristen leben und ohne sie vermutlich aufgeschmissen waeren
auch dass die immigranten (groesstenteils englaender) hier einiges an alternativ-wirtschaft aufbauen die leute mit geld anzieht, zB ueberteuerte biolaeden und freie schulen, etc

das gehoert alles zusammen, ist nicht voneinander trennbar und ich denke dass medienleute die hier mal fuer nen tag vorbeischaun das alles nicht in so kurzer zeit wirklich (be)greifen koennen…
auch dass die nicht wirklich neutral an die sache rangehn

fazit: im vergleich zur gesellschaft draussen hat beneficio vorteile, wie auch nachteile aber es ist weder besser noch schlechter nur anders meiner meiung nach ein wichtiges experimentierfeld fuer alternative lebensweisen und ein interessanter ort um viel zu lernen

wer nicht mal durch dieses magische tal gelaufen ist, den spirit gefuehlt hat, wird es nicht verstehen…

kurz noch zum dragonfestival: der ansruch des dragon ist ein komplett frei und dynamisch organisiertes festival, das ist ueberhaupt kein bisschen mit sowas wie nem jahrmarkt vergleichbar
es gibt nicht wirklich veranstalter und was dort passiert ist vorher nicht absehbar
es gibt kein programm, nichts, nur 2000-20.000 leute und massig eigeninitiative …. underground kuenstler und interessante leute, thats it
